One thing that both Freud and Maslow (and most psychologists) agreed about was that self-knowledge is a key to mental health. The process of self-exploration is a prerequisite to maximizing happiness and personal power.
From our point of view, Freud's greatest discovery is that the great cause of much psychological illness is the fear of knowledge of oneself-- of one's emotions, impulses, memories, capacities, potentialities, of one's destiny.
